The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
NOC, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.
About the role
As a Research Vessel Master, you have overall responsibility and accountability for ensuring the safe operation of the vessel, the safety and security of all on-board and the protection of the environment, including but not limited to the safe navigation and efficient operation of the vessel and delivery of all on-board scientific research.
You will have overall command of the vessel and are responsible for the effective and efficient management of the vessel itself, including operational, scientific, departmental and administrative functions on-board and the day to day line management of all crew members assigned to the vessel.
You will be accountable to the Research Ship Manager for all operational, technical (joint with the vessel’s Chief Engineer and Engineering Manager) and on-board crew matters.
When ashore and not on leave, you may be required to work for periods at NOC to assist in the planning and co-ordinating of future research expeditions together with Principle Scientists and NMF Operations staff, or to assist in supporting the overall activities taking place at that time.
It is essential you have the following certifications: –
- STCW 2010 (as amended) Certificate of Competency Master 11/2 Unlimited (with no restrictions) or equivalent Certificate of Competency where applicable
- DP experience/Certification
- GMDSS General Operations Certificate
- Certificate of Proficiency in Medical Care on board ship
- CPRSC and Advanced Fire Fighting
- valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1), Unlimited, without restrictions
- Certificate of Proficiency in the use of ECDIS as per STWC 2010.
You must be able to demonstrate success at a senior level in a relevant work environment, back by evidence of significant and appropriate specialist knowledge.
You must be able to live and work under arduous seagoing conditions and extremes of climate.
You will have excellent communication skills both verbal and written as well as planning and organising skills.
It is essential you have excellent IT skills.
Experience of working on scientific research vessels and an enthusiasm for the understanding of the marine environment is desirable.
