Interislander provides a vital transport and economic link between the North and South Island of New Zealand. Every year Interislander carries over 800,000 people, 250,000 cars and nearly 2 million lane metres of rail and CV freight. The current operation consists of three ships and terminals. Excitingly the fleet and terminals are about to be renewed and this position offers the opportunity to influence and lead the transition and transformation of our current operation.
Interislander is a business unit within KiwiRail group with the shipping operation commencing in 1962. We pride ourselves on providing a secure and reliable freight route plus creating great passenger experiences by providing efficient, friendly and comprehensive services. Key focus areas for InterIslander and the Fleet Operations Manager role is to: improve safety; build a high performance integrated team aligned with KiwiRail’s group vision; empower and develop our front line leaders and teams; achieve budget and commercial outcomes; ensure we sustain on-time- performance and reliability through effective asset management and application of resources; plus, help design, transition and transformation of the business for the new ships and terminals.
This is a senior leadership role, reporting to the Executive General Manager InterIslander to lead our Engineering and Marine teams across our fleet. You will be responsible for driving excellence and high performance, spearheading focus on sustained operational delivery which underpins KiwiRail’s customer promise so that we can invest and focus on lifting customer experience, employee engagement and commercial returns. You will ensure the effective and safe execution of all day-to-day operations to deliver agreed performance, customer and employee targets. Key to the success of this role will be your planning and development of future workforce capacity, productivity and capability, including the development of a one team culture of continuous improvement that encourages innovative thinking. You will be pivotal in the change management programme in the introduction of our new fleets, collaborating with key stakeholders across the project to ensure continuance of smooth operations and delivery.
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring with you a proven track record in leading large scale operational teams, delivering to operational and commercial outcomes. You will be a proven senior professional with demonstrated ability in successful leadership through transformation business growth and change plus fostering an inclusive culture. You will have extensive experience in managing multi disciplined teams who can operate on all levels and focus on a bottom-up leadership approach built on engagement and collaboration. You have strong strategic agility, challenge the status quo and have a future focussed approach to drive operational efficiencies and lead best practice. Ideally, we would expect individuals to have specific senior leadership experience within marine industry. The successful applicant will be required to be flexible in working on the ships and in the office.
