Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is currently looking for a CPO Science Bosun. This is an exciting opportunity to work on-board a world-leading polar exploration and research vessel. The state-of-the-art on-board facilities and future-proof containerised laboratories on this world-leading science platform will offer new research opportunities for polar scientists.

The successful candidate will take part in supporting research cruises carrying out research programmes and transporting people and supplies to the BAS research stations in Antarctica.

Purpose

▪ Oversee the maintenance (in conjunction with Deck Engineer), deployment and operation of vessel’s scientific equipment suite.
▪ Safe operation of all deck equipment and scientific deck equipment.
▪ Safe and efficient undertaking of cargo and boating operations.
▪ General duties of a Seaman Grade One as required.

Duties

▪ To carry out planned maintenance tasks as directed and to ensure a high level of ship board cleanliness both inside and out.
▪ To assist in managing the safe loading, stowing, securing and discharging of cargo, scientific equipment and stores.
▪ To work with the Principal Scientist, AME & Chief Officer in support of the scientific ship de-mobilisation and mobilisation process, working closely with the CPO (Deck).
▪ To take responsibility for the safe handling, deployment and recovery of scientific equipment in conjunction with the equipment owners and in consultation with AME and the Chief Officer.
▪ To assist in the preparation, launch and recovery of boats.
▪ To participate in ship-keeping duties in port.
▪ To liaise with CPO (Deck) in the creation of rotas for science watches in conjunction with the Chief Officer.
▪ To assist in any deck operations, where necessary.
▪ To provide training to other members of the crew with respect to the operation of winches, gantries and other scientific equipment carried or deployed from the vessel.
▪ To be the point of contact for and to AME and Science personnel in all aspects of ship fitted and portable scientific equipment operation.
▪ To assist the scientific staff in the safe rigging, deployment, recovery and stowage of scientific equipment.
▪ To deputise for an officer on deck during lengthy scientific operations or as required.
▪ To work in conjunction with the Deck Engineer to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of vessel science equipment.
▪ To assist with scientific cruise planning activities as required.
▪ To undertake any other duties consistent with the key responsibilities and duties of the post, as directed by the Master.

Knowledge & Experience

Qualifications

  • Seaman Grade 1 – AB’s Certificate issued by MCA – Essential
  • Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions – Essential
  • Navigational Watch Rating Certificate – Essential
  • Four Elements of STCW basic training to STCW 2010, as amended (PST, FPFF, EFA & PSSR) – Essential
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC&RB) – Essential
  • STCW Fast Rescue Boat certificate – Desirable [3]
  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting – Essential
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties – Essential
  • Helideck Emergency Response Team Member – Desirable [3]
  • Evidence of continual professional development – Desirable [3]
