The Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC) is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). NOC, part of the Natural and Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.
About the role
As one of four permanent Chief Officers on either the Royal Research Ship (RRS) DISCOVERY or RRS JAMES COOK, you report to the Master and will be responsible for the safe and efficient running of the Deck Department.
In addition, you will have a number of whole ship responsibilities, including but not limited to ship safety, security and stability.
As part of the senior management team on-board, you will support the Master in ensuring the effective and efficient management and operation of the vessel. This includes programming, scientific, departmental and administrative functions and the day to day line management of Deck Department personnel.
You will be accountable to the Master for all equipment, material and operational matters pertaining to the Deck Department.
You will be accountable to the Research Ship Manager for all operational, technical (joint with the vessel’s Chief Engineer and Engineering Manager) and on-board crew matters.
When ashore and not on leave, you may be required to work for periods at NOC to assist in the planning and co-ordinating of future research expeditions together with Principle Scientists and NMF Operations staff, or to assist in supporting the overall activities taking place at that time.
It is essential you have the following certifications: –
- STCW 2010 (as amended) Certificate of Competency Master 11/2 Unlimited (with no restrictions) or equivalent Certificate of Competency where applicable
- GMDSS General Operations Certificate
- Certificate of Proficiency in Medical Care on board ship
- CPRSC and Advanced Fire Fighting
- valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1), Unlimited, without restrictions.
You must be able to demonstrate success at a senior level in a relevant work environment, backed by evidence of significant and appropriate specialist knowledge.
You must be able to live and work under arduous seagoing conditions and extremes of climate.
You will have excellent communication skills both verbal and written as well as planning and organising skills.
It is essential you have good IT skills.
Experience of working on scientific research vessels and an enthusiasm for the understanding of the marine environment is desirable.
