The GSL awards the professional title of Chartered Geologist (CGeol) and is licensed by the Science Council to award the title of Chartered Scientist(CSci). Chartered status demonstrates a high level of knowledge, skills and experience, and chartered geologists are bound by an enforceable code of professional conduct. Chartered status is often a requirement to be authorised to sign off official documents or reports, and in many job sectors it is essential for promotion past a certain point.
Chartered Geologists are assessed by a professional in their area of expertise and are required to demonstrate key professional competencies and a number of years of experience.
Geoscientists working towards chartered status record their professional activities to show that they are developing and maintaining their skills and knowledge. Mentors are available to guide geoscientists when they are early in their careers through the process of continuing professional development (CPD). The GSL provides a reporting system for members to record CPD activities which will remain independent of their employment and ensure there is no interruption if a member changes job.
The GSL works to ensure high standards in the profession by offering endorsement for company training schemes and courses to the benefit of both geoscientists and their employers.
