About the role:
National Marine Facilities (NMF) is responsible for the operation and management of two NERC owned vessels and providing wider support in the co-ordination and management of the NERC Marine Facility Science programme.
The role of the Marine Technical Manager is to lead and co-ordinate all aspects of marine technical and maintenance support for NMF operated ships in support of the NERC Marine Facilities Programme (MFP) of worldwide oceanographic science. You will lead and co-ordinate all aspects of marine technical and maintenance support for NMF operated ships in support of the NERC Marine Facilities Programme (MFP) of worldwide oceanographic science, including the delivery of long term strategy, the proactive resolution of emergent defects and the management of refits and contracts.
In addition, you will be responsible for long-term budgetary forecasts and technical budget management, the management of all-seagoing engineering staff, building and management of shipyard, OEM, supplier and contractor relationships. You will support the Research Ship Manager with respect to activities and procedures to comply with Flag, Class, ISM and other applicable international and national codes and regulations.
You will be professionally qualified or with substantial experience in a marine engineering capacity. It is highly desirable you hold a Chief Engineer III/2 Unlimited Certificate of Competency.
In-depth knowledge of ship management is essential and experience in marine science would be an advantage.
You must have an excellent record of accomplishment in your field and the energy, drive and commitment to fulfil the vision and objectives, being able to lead, develop and support multi-disciplined teams.
With a marine background, you will have preferably served as both a Chief Engineer at sea and as an Engineering Superintendent/Manager ashore.
You will have experience and a comprehensive knowledge of marine engineering, fleet operations and ship repair and maintenance. You will need to be a clear, logical thinker with strong analytical skills and the ability to think laterally when required.
A proven team leader and effective decision maker, you will be self-motivated and proactive and have the ability communicate well at all levels.
